Tifereth Israel Congregation (TI), is an active egalitarian Conservative synagogue in the
Shepherd Park neighborhood of Washington, DC. Our vibrant community takes pride in caring
for members in need while engaging in social justice issues in our neighborhood and beyond.
We are located 2 blocks from beautiful Rock Creek Park, just south of downtown Silver Spring,
easily accessible by bus, car and bike.

OVERVIEW
The Director of Lifelong Learning (the “Director”) is the visionary leader of educational
programming at Tifereth Israel Congregation in Washington, DC.
Lifelong learning takes on many facets at TI, and is a critical component of our community’s
vitality. Our Lifelong Learning program helps members of all ages–tots through adults–learn,
mature and grow as engaged members of their families, our congregation, and the broader
Jewish community. Through inclusive and age-appropriate programs, classes and activities, we
help our members develop both the skills and the comfort they need to be part of a participatory
synagogue community.
The Director will bring creative thinking to the role and will serve as a full partner with our staff
and lay leaders in the education and engagement initiatives of our diverse congregation; the
curricular, administrative, and educational leader of a vibrant religious school; and the
coordinator of youth, family and adult educational opportunities. The Director will share our
aspirations for education and engagement efforts that reach across the generations to excite,
challenge, and enrich all our members.
The Director is a senior professional who works in conjunction with the Vice President for
Lifelong Learning, with additional coordination with the Rabbi, the Executive Director and other
staff and lay leadership to create a unified and dynamic educational program. The Director is a
member of the senior staff team, as well as an integral member of the overall staff team. The
Director reports to the Rabbi.
The Director supports membership and engagement strategies as they relate to children, youth
and families. If a member of the clergy, the Director will partner with Rabbi Werbow as a
member of the clergy and pastoral team.

DUTIES
The Director of Education (the “Director”) is responsible for the planning and oversight of formal
education at Tifereth Israel (“TI”). Key components of this position are outlined below.
Religious School
The Director will serve as Principal for the The Paul and Annetta Himmelfarb School and of the
High School Seminar (together, the “School”). The School creates a foundation for deepening
connections to Judaism, TI, Israel and the modern world. The mission of the School is to build a
vibrant program where students and parents actively live Jewish lives expressed through their
actions and values. TI strives to foster a welcoming and enthusiastic community where all family
members can find multiple ways to connect to the congregation and the Jewish religion through
social and learning events, parent activities, volunteering, social action, and friendships. The
Director will oversee all aspects of School administration, including the annual budget.

Bat/Bar/Kabbalat Mitzvah
The Director will, with Rabbi Werbow, usher our students and families through their
Bat/Bar/Kabbalat Mitzvah (BBK) experience.

Youth Engagement
The Director will develop and promote an engaging youth program for all Tifereth Israel children
in elementary, middle, and high school. Engagement will include youth groups for each age
cohort as well as Shabbat morning and holiday programming.

Families with Young Children
The Director will work with relevant committees to engage and support families with young
children though regular programming. that will imbue their Jewish lives with meaning. The
Director will create opportunities to connect young families to the broader TI community.

Adult Learning
The Director will work collaboratively with adult education lay leaders to help develop and
deliver an inspiring and cohesive adult education program.

Budget
The Director will prepare an annual budget under the direction of the Executive Director. The
Director will track spending throughout the year and maintain programs in accordance with the
budget.
